The third quality that typifies the devout love of husband and wife is the birth and rearing of children. When I was a principal, I came to see, in the lives of the parents of our students and especially in the lives of the ladies who worked in the front office, the demands that being a parent makes. I stand in awe of you who are parents. As some billboards remind us these days, kids don’t come with a manual. And the natural process of adolescents negotiating their independence together with their unfortunate capacity to make wrong, sometimes dangerous decisions, makes your vocation as parents at times, what Francis and Jane used to call, a martyrdom of love.
